Chevrolet has released several different lines of the Silverado over the years, and they have improved with each model. Earlier versions have some slight differences in equipment and engine variances, and there are some noticeable differences in trim or option packages and grills since it was first produced.
The ""classic"" GMT800 was the first Chevrolet Silverado to be produced. Released as a 99' model during the year 1998, this light-duty truck was manufactured for one year before it evolved. It was first available in a regular or 3-door extended cab with the option of a V6 or V8 engine. A 4-door option was added in 2000. It was not until 2001 that the heavy-duty version was released, which brought about a whole series of GMT Silverados to follow. Included among those released later is the SS, released in 2003 and the Hybrid model, released in 2004.
The 2003 SS, labeled high performance, boasted an upgraded interior, exterior and drive train. The engine, a 6.0 liter Vortec V8, put out 345 HP at 5200 RPMs and was dubbed the ""VortecMAX"" by Chevrolet.
In 2004, Chevrolet released the hybrid Silverado. It was the first passenger hybrid ever released by Chevrolet. The engine was designed to shut-off once the truck stopped. It featured a 42 Volt power supply to start the engine back up once the brake petal was raised and a primary V8, propulsion powered Vortec engine. The hybrid was only available commercially until 2005 and production was stopped during 2008, though it was reintroduced as a second generation two-mode hybrid in 2009.
In 2006, the GMT900 line was released. Almost completely redesigned inside and out with improved aerodynamics and increased power, this truck was bigger and badder than any of its prior versions. The 2012 models include the Silverado 1500, 3500HD, 2500HD and the hybrid.
With each year that the Silverado is released, it just keeps getting better. Future concept models are already in motion. It is exciting to wait and see what the next model will bring. Both for commercial and regular consumer use, they have proven their saying as being ""the most dependable, longest lasting truck on the road.""
